“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed.”~Booker T. Washington 1856-1915

Many of us have looked upon where we presently are: our positions, titles or degrees of education we hold, or financial standing in society and compare it to where we expected or would like to be. In doing this, we almost always become discouraged and disappointed. Why do we do this?

This is the egoic mind at work. The ego is the part of our mind (psyche) which focuses upon lower-level thinking and its primary motivator is survival. It must survive at all costs, even sometimes at the expense of others. It tells us we must be better than “them,” whoever they are. It also tells us we are entitled to be or have something. While absolutely necessary, it is essential to be able to move beyond this. Your success depends on it greatly.

Eckhart Tolle explains in “The Power of Now”:

“It (ego)…contains personal identifications, not only with possessions, but also with opinions, external appearance, long-standing resentments, or concepts of yourself as better than or not as good as others, as a success or failure.”

When you find that you are in the grips of telling yourself you should have accomplished such and so, interrupt this thought pattern. Interrupt it by bringing more perspective such that you become more aware of what is happening at the present time. As you continue to work toward your goals remember to enjoy the process and the journey. That is where most of the meaning of experience is found.

We have learned earlier that the quality of your life is the quality of your communication. How you communicate with yourself, what you say in your mind whether positive or negative affects your state of being. Also, how you create rapport with others, how you tap into the mental strategy of another human being will affect outcomes.

I have discussed many times how there is no such thing as failure, there are only results. Either you want them, or you do not. The important thing is, you know you can change them at will. If you believe you can accomplish what you set out to do, then you can. If you believe you cannot, then you can’t. It’s just that simple. Most resources that you will ever need do not come from without, but within. It is important to remember then, every effect has a cause. Also, every problem has a solution.

Do you believe this?

Pretty much every problem does have a solution, but oftentimes we do not want to accept that solution. We don’t want to do what it takes to be successful. When we lack goal definition, we lack focus. We have no idea what we are really trying to do. If this is true, perception then lacks clarity. This is important to understand.

When the mind has a defined goal, it can direct, refocus and redirect; it will adapt until it reaches its final result. It will not rest until it has realized victory. When you know your outcome, you give your brain a clear enough image of the kinds of information it receives that are priority. Here you provide the clarity it needs to be effective.

These are just a few examples of the many transitions we all commonly accomplish throughout life. Most are quite challenging and come as a matter of course. Just by living, we accept them.

There is no escaping the issue: divorce, separation, a break-up, children leaving the nest, and death. As painful as these things are, they happen and we find ourselves struggling to find peace with them. They create inner turmoil and conflict.

But while this is true, there is another profound concept about the pain and agony of transitioning–there is growth. For through our “growing pains” we can begin to see something wonderful take place within ourselves.

We realize that in order for growth and progress to continue, we must be continually transitioning.

Each and every single instance of major change requires a deep, personal reflection

We are forced to take time out to confront the weaknesses and fears which prevent our freedom. We are compelled to choose how to proceed and the best course of action to moving ahead.

As you move in and out of the various transitions of your life, awaken awareness of the beauty contained within them.

Remember the butterfly

Society’s Success Image

Versace, Rolex and Rolls Royce. Rockefeller, Hilton, Gates. When you read that list, what is the first thing that registers in your mind?

Money, of course.

In our society, we have been told that money equals success. This is the reason that when we’re asked questions about success symbols we see a kind of collective blueprint. A blueprint that does not take into consideration that success is to be determined on an individual level. So when you see, read, or hear certain words, phrases or pictures, you will tend to immediately associate success with large amounts of money. You will associate it with material wealth.

This is a distortion.

You must always determine success for yourself. Ideal success images are personal and unique; it is an individual concept, not a collective one.

You know what you want and what’s most important to you, your values. Even though they may be unclear or not yet completely defined, you know what they are. You’ve always known; you just need to take a little time exploring and discovering, or re-discovering them. Individual values determine success, not objects such as cars, clothing or jewelry. Neither does certain family names.

When you’ve spent huge amounts of time locked within the rat race of life, many things about yourself gets knocked to the side, or put off. It has to do with how the brain is wired; there is only so much information it can process at a time. It can be likened unto an overloaded circuit system. When the system has reached it’s full electrical capacity, the power will shut off and nothing turns on. It can be the same for people. The huge difference is that with people, we don’t turn off; we tune out. We cease to make decisions and just kind of go with the flow of things. We go into automatic pilot mode.

Are you just along for the ride? If so, this is what you do:

You tolerate and conform. You shun responsibility. Most essentially, you cease to have an opinion, or think for yourself.

Many of us confuse success. We perceive it as the degree of ability we have in obtaining a specific set of objects, when it’s actually a feeling. Success is actually a feeling of congruency, wholeness and fulfillment. We must feel that our lives match our belief system. This is an absolute element of being successful. This is why people can have so much materially and still be unhappy. Fulfillment is success; it’s living out your dreams. It’s aiming for and ultimately reaching that beautiful star.

It’s accomplishment and achievement on a much grander scale; it’s on your own terms. It’s what you believe to be good, right and just.

What if you knew all the answers?

I mean, what if you had all the details of what your life is to consist of, and knew what was supposed to happen? Of course, we know deep down that this just isn’t possible. We can’t foretell the future. But yet, we often refuse to “act” or decide because we don’t have all the detailed answers to everything. We hesitate due to our inhibitions and preoccupations about uncertainty.

Dear Friends,

Don’t be afraid to broaden your horizons.

Challenge your current understanding of how things ought to be; allow a little uncertainty or uneasiness.

Invest in yourself by learning something completely new.

Ask, “What’s next for me?”

Think, “Can the same thing be accomplished better another way?”

Wonder, “What’s behind that door?” Don’t be afraid to open it.

Conquer your fears.

It’s nice to allow for a bit of surprise. It makes life quite interesting.

Challenge, Invest, Ask, Think, Wonder, Conquer.

P.S. By avoiding challenge, and uncertainty it is a 100% certainty that you are going miss out on something really, really good.

Those who have mastered communication’s effective usefulness can change their own experience of the world and the world’s experience of them. All behavior and feelings find their original roots in some form of communication. Those who affect the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the majority of us are those who know how to use this tool of power. Think of a few women who have changed our world–Catherine The Great, Susan B. Anthony, Hapshepsut Queen of Egypt, Florence Nightengale, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Marie Curie, Dr. Mae Jemison, Harriet Tubman, Condeleezza Rice…

What all these women had in common was that they were master communicators. They were able to take their vision, and communicate it to others with such congruency that they affected and influenced the way people thought and even acted.

Through their communication power, they changed the world.

There was a man who failed in business at age 21, was defeated in a legislative race at age 22, failed in business again at age 24, overcame the death of his sweetheart at age 26, had a nervous breakdown at age 27, lost a congressional race at 34. He lost yet another congressional race at 36, followed by losing a senatorial race at age 45. What is even more is he failed in an effort to become vice-president at age 47 and lost another senatorial race at age 49.

He was elected president at age 52.

That man’s name was Abraham Lincoln. Could he have become president if he had seen these events of his life as failures? Not likely.

Consider Thomas Edison who it is said tried over 9,000 times to perfect the light bulb unsuccesfully. When asked if he was going to have 10,000 failures, he replied “I didn’t fail. I just discovered another way not to invent the electric light bulb.”

People who believe in failure are almost guaranteed a mediocre existence. Failure is something that is just not perceived by people who achieve greatness.

Many people grew up hearing these words: “Work hard and do things even when you don’t want to do them-it’ll make you a stronger more successful person.” Hmmm.

Well, in my experience it will make you a miserable person. How many kids end up in law or med school just to please their parents, only to find themselves hating their jobs and lives later?

I always write: “Do what you want, as long as you truly love doing it,” but then I also remind them that anything they love can be turned into a business, and that’s the only way to have TRUE financial and personal freedom!

If you don’t enjoy what you do, you are more likely to quit with any obstacle you are presented with.

Filling your time with things that are not truly meaningful to you creates more days and weeks that you’ll want to pass faster. Life is short. Why deliberately choose to spend some of it in misery?
